The latest stable ExplorerPatcher is 26100.9711.71.1, published on 29 Oct 2026. GitHub lists 301 releases in total: 103 stable and 198 pre-releases. The newest pre-release in our 6 Nov 2026 snapshot is 26100.8457.70.4 (6 Jul 2026), older than 71.1, so there is currently nothing newer than the stable release.

Which Windows builds each release covers
ExplorerPatcher handles each Windows 11 build family differently, so a release only makes sense next to the Windows build you run. This timeline shows the strategy per build family, taken from upstream’s compatibility notes. The compatibility page has the details and the Build Checker.
How version numbers work
A release name such as 26100.9711.71.1 has four parts:

Upstream’s README and wiki do not explain this scheme. We read it from the source, where the version is stored as four fields (VER_MAJOR, VER_MINOR, VER_BUILD_HI, VER_BUILD_LO), and from the tag history. Treat it as our reading, not as an official definition. Older tags carry a trailing commit hash, as in 26100.4946.69.6_7384790; the 70.x and 71.x tags do not.
The first two numbers are not a requirement. The release notes of 71.1 list nine Windows builds the developers tested, from 22621.4317 to 29695.1001. Our own test machines ran build 26100.33674 (Windows Server 2025) and 26200.9725 (Windows 11 25H2 on Arm64), neither of which appears in that name, and 71.1 installed and ran on both. The Properties window’s About section shows the installed version.
The latest release explained: 71.1
Worked in our tests 26100.9711.71.1, published 29 Oct 2026. It has two files: ep_setup.exe for x64 (11.8 MB) and ep_setup_arm64.exe for Arm64 (11.5 MB). Here is what upstream’s release notes say changed, in plain words:
- Keeps up with new Windows builds. It adds fixes for builds 26100.9343 and newer, build 28000 and the 29xxx family.
- A safer taskbar. ExplorerPatcher’s own taskbar now checks that it is compatible with the running Windows version and falls back to the stock taskbar instead of crashing. We did not test that fallback.
- Crash fixes. A crash loop on build 29634 and newer, and a crash when apps go full screen on 26220.9343 and newer, are fixed.
- Classic context menu. Disabling the Windows 11 context menu works again on builds with customizable menus.
- Weather. The weather script was repaired after it stopped working.
- Arm64. Many Windows 10 Start menu, Alt+Tab and Win+X fixes now apply on Arm64 too.
- Fewer false crash alarms. ExplorerPatcher now loads into the
explorer.exethat hosts the desktop and taskbar, not into every Explorer process.
Tested on: 22621.4317 x64, 22631.7652 x64, 26100.8037 Arm64, 26100.33650 x64, 26300.9711 x64, 26340.9767 x64, 28000.3231 x64, 28120.3302 x64 and 29695.1001 x64 (developers’ list).
What we found. On 6 Nov 2026 we installed 71.1 over 70.3 on three test machines: it took 5 to 7 seconds, kept our settings, and Windows Defender found nothing in it. Read the install guide and the update guide for the steps, and the status page for how it behaves on newer Windows builds.
Downloads. GitHub’s counters show 555,646 downloads of the x64 file and 7,072 of the Arm64 file in the first 8 days, about 1.3 % for Arm64. These numbers also rise when ExplorerPatcher’s update checker reads the first bytes of a file, so they overstate real downloads; see the update guide.

ExplorerPatcher's taskbar now checks that it is compatible with the running Windows version and falls back to the stock taskbar instead of crashing. Fixes a crash loop on build 29634+ and a crash when apps go full screen, fixes the classic context menu on builds with customizable menus, repairs the weather script, and brings many Windows 10 Start menu, Alt+Tab and Win+X fixes to Arm64. EP is also injected more selectively into explorer.exe, which reduces false crash detections.

Pre-releases
Of the 301 releases on GitHub, 198 are marked pre-release and 103 are stable. Pre-releases are automatic builds of the newest code. Upstream recommends them only to people who want a fix early and can report problems, and the setting that offers them in the updater is labelled “not recommended”. Our 6 Nov 2026 snapshot has the newest pre-release as 26100.8457.70.4 from 6 Jul 2026, which is older than the current stable 71.1. We do not list pre-releases here; they are on GitHub. Release numbers have fallen a lot. GitHub shows 98 releases in 2021, 104 in 2022, 50 in 2023, 35 in 2024, 9 in 2025 and 5 in 2026 so far, counting pre-releases. Downloads peaked in 2024 with releases from that year:

Common questions
What is the latest version of ExplorerPatcher?
It is 26100.9711.71.1, published on 29 Oct 2026, with files for x64 and Arm64. We installed it on Windows Server 2025 and on Windows 11 25H2 Arm64 on 6 Nov 2026.
What do the numbers in the version mean?
The first two numbers look like a Windows build number, the third is the ExplorerPatcher version counter and the fourth is a revision. Upstream does not spell this out, so that is our reading of its source and tags. The first two numbers are not a minimum Windows version.
Should I install the newest release or an older one?
Use the newest stable release unless the status page shows a problem with it on your Windows build. Older releases are on GitHub, but we have not tested installing an older setup over a newer one.
Are pre-releases safe to use?
Upstream says they contain the newest commits and some may break things for a while. It marks the setting for receiving them as not recommended. We did not test any pre-release.
